Galaxy cluster mergers are representative of a wide range of physics, making them an excellent probe of the properties of dark matter and the ionized plasma of the intracluster medium. To date, most studies have focused on mergers occurring in the plane of the sky, where morphological features can be readily identified. To allow study of mergers with arbitrary orientation, we have assembled multi-probe data for the eight-cluster ICM-SHOX sample sensitive to both morphology and line of sight velocity. The first ICM-SHOX paper (Silich+2023) provided an overview of our methodology applied to one member of the sample, MACS J0018.5+1626, in order to constrain its merger geometry. That work resulted in an exciting new discovery of a velocity space decoupling of its gas and dark matter distributions. In this work, we describe the availability and quality of multi-probe data for the full ICM-SHOX galaxy cluster sample. The intracluster medium of the Perseus Cluster exhibits spiral-shaped X-ray surface brightness discontinuities known as ``cold fronts'', which simulations indicate are caused by the sloshing motion of the gas after the passage of a subcluster. Recent observations of Perseus have shown that these fronts extend to large radii. In this work, we present simulations of the formation of sloshing cold fronts in Perseus using the AREPO magnetohydrodynamics code, to produce a plausible scenario for the formation of the large front at a radius of 700 kpc. Our simulations explore a range of subcluster masses and impact parameters. We find that low-mass subclusters cannot generate a cold front that can propagate to such a large radius, and that small impact parameters create too much turbulence which leads to the disruption of the cold front before it reaches such a large distance. Subclusters which make only one core passage produce a stable initial front that expands to large radii, but without a second core passage of the subcluster other fronts are not created at a later time in the core region. We find a small range of simulations with subclusters with mass ratios of $R \sim 1:5$ and initial impact parameter of $\theta~\sim~20-25^\circ$ which not only produce the large cold front but a second set in the core region at later times. These simulations indicate that the ``ancient' cold front is $\sim$6-8.5 Gyr old. Galaxy cluster mergers are rich sources of information to test cluster astrophysics and cosmology. However, cluster mergers produce complex projected signals that are difficult to interpret physically from individual observational probes. Multi-probe constraints on the gas and dark matter cluster components are necessary to infer merger parameters that are otherwise degenerate. We present ICM-SHOX (Improved Constraints on Mergers with SZ, Hydrodynamical simulations, Optical, and X-ray), a systematic framework to jointly infer multiple merger parameters quantitatively via a pipeline that directly compares a novel combination of multi-probe observables to mock observables derived from hydrodynamical simulations. We report a first application of the ICM-SHOX pipeline to MACS J0018.5+1626, wherein we systematically examine simulated snapshots characterized by a wide range of initial parameters to constrain the MACS J0018.5+1626 merger geometry. We constrain the epoch of MACS J0018.5+1626 to the range $0$--$60$ Myr post-pericenter passage, and the viewing angle is inclined $\approx 27$--$40$ degrees from the merger axis. We obtain constraints for the impact parameter ($\lesssim 250$ kpc), mass ratio ($\approx 1.5$--$3.0$), and initial relative velocity when the clusters are separated by 3 Mpc ($\approx 1700$--3000 km s$^{-1}$). The primary and secondary clusters initially (at 3 Mpc) have gas distributions that are moderately and strongly disturbed, respectively. We discover a velocity space decoupling of the dark matter and gas distributions in MACS J0018.5+1626, traced by cluster-member galaxy velocities and the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect, respectively. Aims: The large abundances of CH$^+$ in the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) are a long standing issue of our understanding of the thermodynamical and chemical states of the gas. We investigate, here, the formation of CH+ in turbulent and multiphase environments, where the heating of the gas is almost solely driven by the photoelectric effect. Methods: The diffuse ISM is simulated using the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) code RAMSES which self-consistently computes the dynamical and thermal evolution of the gas along with the time-dependent evolutions of the abundances of H$^+$, H, and H$_2$. The rest of the chemistry, including the abundance of CH$^+$, is computed in post-processing, at equilibrium, under the constraint of out-ofequilibrium of H$^+$, H, and H$_2$. The comparison with the observations is performed taking into account an often neglected, yet paramount, piece of information, namely the length of the intercepted diffuse matter along the observed lines of sight. Results: The quasi totality of the mass of CH$^+$ originates from the unstable gas, in environments where the kinetic temperature is larger than 600 K, the density ranges between 0.6 and 10 cm$^{-3}$, the electronic fraction ranges between 3 x 10$^{-4}$ and 6 x 10$^{-3}$, and the molecular fraction is smaller than 0.4. Its formation is driven by warm and out-of-equilibrium H$_2$ initially formed in the cold neutral medium (CNM) and injected in more diffuse environments and even the warm neutral medium (WNM) through a combination of advection and thermal instability. The simulation which displays the tightest agreement with the HI-to-H$_2$ transition and the thermal pressure distribution observed in the Solar Neighborhood is found to naturally reproduce the observed abundances of CH$^+$, the dispersion of observations, the probability of occurrence of most of the lines of sight, the fraction of non-detections of CH$^+$, and the distribution of its line profiles. The amount of CH$^+$ and the statistical properties of the simulated lines of sight are set by the fraction of unstable gas rich in H$_2$ which is controlled, on Galactic scales, by the mean density of the diffuse ISM (or, equivalently, its total mass), the amplitude of the mean UV radiation field, and the strength of the turbulent forcing. Conclusions: This work offers a new and natural solution to an 80 years old chemical riddle. The almost ubiquitous presence of CH$^+$ in the diffuse ISM likely results from the exchanges of matter between the CNM and the WNM induced by the combination of turbulent advection and thermal instability, without the need to invoke ambipolar diffusion or regions of intermittent turbulent dissipation. The interpretation of Galactic synchrotron observations is complicated by the degeneracy between the strength of the magnetic field perpendicular to the line of sight (LOS), $B_\perp$, and the cosmic-ray electron (CRe) spectrum. Depending on the observing frequency, an energy-independent spectral energy slope $s$ for the CRe spectrum is usually assumed: $s=-2$ at frequencies below $\simeq$400 MHz and $s=-3$ at higher frequencies. Motivated by the high angular and spectral resolution of current facilities such as the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) and future telescopes such as the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), we aim to understand the consequences of taking into account the energy-dependent CRe spectral energy slope on the analysis of the spatial variations of the brightness temperature spectral index, $\beta$, and on the estimate of the average value of $B_\perp$ along the LOS. We illustrate analytically and numerically the impact that different realisations of the CRe spectrum have on the interpretation of the spatial variation of $\beta$. We find that the common assumption of an energy-independent $s$ is valid only in special cases. We show that for typical magnetic field strengths of the diffuse interstellar medium ($\simeq$2$-$20 $\mu$G), at frequencies of 0.1$-$10 GHz, the electrons that are mainly responsible for the synchrotron emission have energies in the range $\simeq$100 MeV$-$50 GeV. This is the energy range where the spectral slope, $s$, of CRe has its greatest variation. We also show that the polarisation fraction can be much smaller than the maximum value of $\simeq 70\%$ because the orientation of ${\bf B}_\perp$ varies across the telescope's beam and along the LOS. Finally, we present a look-up plot that can be used to estimate the average value of $B_\perp$ along the LOS from a set of values of $\beta$ measured at centimetre to metre wavelengths, for a given CRe spectrum., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, accepted by A&A

Faraday tomography of polarimetric observations at low frequency is a unique tool to study the structure of the magneto-ionic interstellar medium (ISM) based on Faraday depth. LOFAR data below 200 MHz revealed a plethora of features in polarization, whose origin remains unknown. Previous studies highlighted the remarkable association of such features to tracers of the magnetized-neutral ISM, as interstellar dust and atomic hydrogen (HI). However, the physical conditions responsible for the correlation between magneto-ionic and neutral media are yet to be clarified. In this letter we investigate further the correlation between LOFAR data and HI observations at 21cm from the Effelsberg-Bonn HI Survey (EBHIS). We focus on the multiphase properties of the HI gas. We present the first statistical study on the morphological correlation between LOFAR tomographic data and the cold (CNM), luke-warm (LNM), and warm (WNM) HI phases, separately. We use the Regularized Optimization for Hyper-Spectral Analysis (ROHSA) approach to decompose the HI phases based on the Gaussian decomposition of the HI spectra. In at least two fields of view -- Fields 3C196 and A -- out of four -- Fields B and C -- we find a significant correlation between LOFAR and EBHIS data using the Histograms of Oriented Gradients (HOG). The absence of correlation in Fields B and C is caused by low signal-to-noise ratio in polarization. The observed HOG correlation in Fields 3C196 and A is associated with all HI phases and it is surprisingly dominant in the CNM and LNM phases. We discuss possible mechanisms that would explain the correlation between CNM, LNM, and WNM, with polarized emission at Faraday depths up to 10 rad m$^{-2}$. We studied the statistical properties of the HI-to-H$_2$ transition observed in absorption in the local diffuse and multiphase ISM to identify the physical processes controlling the probability of occurrence of any line of sight. The turbulent diffuse ISM is modeled using the RAMSES code, which includes detailed treatments of the magnetohydrodynamics, the thermal evolution of the gas, and the chemistry of H$_2$. The impacts of the UV radiation field, the mean density, the turbulent forcing, the integral scale, the magnetic field, and the gravity on the molecular content of the gas are explored through a parametric study covering a wide range of physical conditions. The statistics of the HI-to-H$_2$ transition are interpreted through analytical prescriptions and compared with the observations using a modified and robust version of the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. The results of one simulation, convolved with the distribution of distances of the observational sample, are able to explain most of the statistical properties of the HI-to-H$_2$ transition observed in the local ISM. The tightest agreement is obtained for a neutral diffuse gas modeled over ~200 pc, with a mean density of $1-2$ cm$^{-3}$, illuminated by the standard interstellar UV radiation field, and stirred up by a large-scale compressive turbulent forcing. Within this configuration, the 2D probability histogram of the column densities of H and H$_2$ is remarkably stable and is almost unaltered by gravity, the strength of the turbulent forcing, the resolution of the simulation, or the strength of the magnetic field $B_x$. The weak effect of the resolution and our analytical prescription suggest that the column densities of HI are likely built up in large-scale WNM and CNM structures correlated in density over ~20 pc and ~10 pc, respectively, while those of H$_2$ are built up in CNM structures between ~3 pc and ~10 pc.

The statistical characterization of the diffuse magnetized ISM and Galactic foregrounds to the CMB poses a major challenge. To account for their non-Gaussian statistics, we need a data analysis approach capable of efficiently quantifying statistical couplings across scales. This information is encoded in the data, but most of it is lost when using conventional tools, such as one-point statistics and power spectra. The wavelet scattering transform (WST), a low-variance statistical descriptor of non-Gaussian processes introduced in data science, opens a path towards this goal. We applied the WST to noise-free maps of dust polarized thermal emission computed from a numerical simulation of MHD turbulence. We analyzed normalized complex Stokes maps and maps of the polarization fraction and polarization angle. The WST yields a few thousand coefficients; some of them measure the amplitude of the signal at a given scale, and the others characterize the couplings between scales and orientations. The dependence on orientation can be fitted with the reduced WST (RWST), an angular model introduced in previous works. The RWST provides a statistical description of the polarization maps, quantifying their multiscale properties in terms of isotropic and anisotropic contributions. It allowed us to exhibit the dependence of the map structure on the orientation of the mean magnetic field and to quantify the non-Gaussianity of the data. We also used RWST coefficients, complemented by additional constraints, to generate random synthetic maps with similar statistics. Their agreement with the original maps demonstrates the comprehensiveness of the statistical description provided by the RWST.
